What actually kills your flowers between the farm and the venue

By Sourcing desk · · 6 min read

Vase life is decided in the first six hours after cutting — long before the consignment reaches you. Here's what to ask any supplier before you order.

When a consignment arrives tired, the instinct is to blame the last mile. Almost always, the damage was done in the first six hours.

Field heat is the main culprit

A rose cut at 10am in an open field carries its ambient temperature into the box. Every hour that heat stays in the stem burns through sugar reserves the flower needs to open properly later.

This is why harvest timing matters. Cutting between 4am and 7am, when the plant is fully turgid and the field is cool, buys you days of vase life at no extra cost.

Pre-cooling is the step suppliers skip

Pre-cooling means pulling field heat out — down to 2–4°C — before the flowers are packed. It requires a cold room at or near the farm, it costs money, and it is invisible on the invoice.

It is also the single largest determinant of whether you get six days of vase life or two. When you're comparing quotes and one is noticeably cheaper, this is usually the difference.

The chain is only as cold as its warmest link

  • A pre-cooled box that sits on a hot loading dock for three hours has lost the benefit
  • A reefer truck that's switched off overnight to save fuel is just a box
  • Ask for temperature logs, not assurances

What to ask before you order

  • What time are the flowers cut?
  • Are they pre-cooled before packing, and to what temperature?
  • Is transit temperature-logged, and can I see the log?
  • What's the packing method for this specific flower?

A supplier who can answer all four without hesitating is running a real cold chain. One who deflects is selling you field-warm flowers and hoping the event is short.

Once it reaches you

Your handling matters too. Get the consignment out of the sun immediately, cut stems at an angle before hydrating, use clean water, and keep arrangements away from air-conditioning vents and ripening fruit — ethylene will age blooms faster than heat will.
